On the first evening of Chicago Public Radio's Third Coast Conference there was an open bar mixer.

The room was a blender of voices rising and falling, filling the halls and the elevator capsule two floors above the destination with sound.

Within the room, walls of dense conversations rose above intimate human clusters.

Wonderful to observe and record but strangely impenetrable as well.
